IN CHARACTER
Character Name: Margo Hanson
Canon: The Magicians
Canon Point: After The Rattening, with some CRAU added into the mix
In-Game Tattoo Placement: Margo will receive this tattoo on her ring finger.
Current Health/Status: At this point in time, Margo is in good health. In Pathema she developed good eating habits and, when she wasn’t being driven around by Seth, she walked around town a great deal, so she’s fitter than ever. (Not to mention the obligation to have sex constantly – That’s got to be quite the aerobic workout, right?) She is not presently on any medication, but she’s been hitting her own pain potion pretty hard like an addict might abuse opium. Take that away? You get a grouchy Margo. Hey, she’s been through a lot in the past months.
Apparent Age: 24
Actual Age: 24
Species: Human, but gifted with magic – A witch
History: Margo’s wiki page is pretty limited, so I’ll fill in some blanks with information canon has provided. Margo grew up in a household run by cold, distant parents in Los Angeles, California. She learned of her talent for magic sometime during adolescence. In canon she has admitted to having issues around this time, and we’re talking serious issues. Margo was so ill-adjusted that she wound up as the mastermind behind a magical bank heist in her senior year of high school. As far as we know, it went off without a hitch.
She attended UCLA where she majored in theater, but the real story begins in grad school. Having passed the nearly impossible entrance exam, Margo found herself as a student at Brakebills University, pegged as a specialist in physical magic. There she got to know Eliot Waugh who would become the best friend she’d ever had. The two of them would be partners in crime throwing parties, dabbling in the illegal, and participating in orgies together. Their lives would change with the arrival of a younger student named Quentin.
With him came a lot of trouble and plenty of near death experiences, but also the opportunity to travel to another world named Fillory. In Fillory, Eliot learned that he had royal blood and was crowned High King. He chose none other than his Bambi, Margo, to rule as High Queen next to him, and for Quentin and another of their friends to fill out other positions in the royal court. It wasn’t smooth at first, but that was only a taste of what was to come. The source of all magic in all worlds, the Fillorian Wellspring, had been tainted, and therefore magic in every world was experiencing brownouts. Spells were temperamental and a solution needed to be found. That responsibility now fell on Eliot and Margo’s shoulders.
In addition to that, after being duped and deeply offended by a Crown Prince, Margo declared war on a neighboring kingdom in the heat of the moment – A war, as it turned out, that Fillory could not afford to fight. Once more, Margo had to return to Earth to pull off another magical bank heist to steal enough gold bars to fund the war she had caused. Even then, it wasn’t so easy. Problems kept mounting up until Eliot decided to solve their problem by challenging the king of the neighboring kingdom to a sword fight. He believed that, with magic, he could become an expert swordfighter. It was true – A magic spell had him fighting even more impressively than the other king, but the Wellspring was fickle. Fearing that Eliot would die due to a magical brownout, Margo bargained with the only beings in Fillory that could help ensure the magic wouldn’t run out – the fairies.
They agreed to fix the Wellspring in exchange for a child and Margo was willing to have a child for them, but they wanted the child carried by Eliot’s pregnant wife. Desperate, Margo bargained off Eliot’s unborn child thinking it would save his life. The Wellspring was fixed, but the bargain was for naught. Eliot returned to the castle declaring to Margo that he had ended the war by agreeing to marry the king of the other kingdom. She kept her bargain with the fairies a secret. It was only when Eliot’s wife went missing and people around the castle were turned into rats that Margo’s secret came out. Eliot, heartbroken with what his best friend had done, sent Margo to the best room in the dungeon, ordering his men to make sure that she got all of her amenities.
Behind his back, she drank a potion that would send her to the fairy realm, intending to solve the mess on her own. That’s where her point in canon leaves off.
Hometown/World: Margo is a west coast lady, having been born and raised in Los Angeles, but her current hometown… Well, it’s difficult to say. When she’s studying magic, her hometown can be considered New York. When she’s busy governing a country, her territory is the magical land of Fillory. Most recently, she’s been stuck on the island of Pathema where the jackass god Eros keeps and collars people for his own entertainment. It looks a lot like Ancient Greece.

CRAU History and Impact: Margo’s CRAU began when she was plucked from Fillory and placed on the island of Pathema. Pathema was a world where the god Eros collared the new arrivals and forced them by threat of death to have sex with one another. Like most situations, though, Margo found ways to rise above the trainwreck she’d found herself in. She found someone to share a monogamous relationship with and even opened her own apothecary, but that started to fall apart as she realized she had feelings for her (almost boyfriend?) boyfriend’s brother and only got worse when her steady lover was sent home. It was no secret that she was crushed by his departure and the feelings for his brother weren’t going anywhere. If she thought it had been a trainwreck before, it certainly was now.
Because of this CRAU, Margo has become a more loyal person and values monogamy a little more. She’s more knowledgeable about potions. While she was an extremely liberal woman before, she values her freedom more than ever now and is extremely thrilled to be free from her collar. She’s actually on the verge of becoming another Daenerys Targaryen and taking the title ‘breaker of chains’ for herself.
Personality: One quality that definitely defines Margo and all that happens in her life is her craftiness or cunning. She is not always straightforward in trying to achieve what she wants. For instance, she has drugged a friend to get him to participate in a test and she has carefully chosen her words in a conversation to get a girl to bargain away her unborn child to fairies to save Margo’s best friend’s life. There is no doubt that there is a great deal of intelligence behind her machinations, but they are usually less than honest.
Another important facet of Margo is her loyalty to those who are important to her. In canon, she has risked her life, sacrificed one of her eyes, and done despicable things all in the name of protecting her friends. She would likely lay down her own life before letting anyone harm her best friend Eliot who is undoubtedly the one person she truly lets in past her rough exterior. Another character in her character once commented that she didn’t have any friends, but Margo has a handful of them and she treats the bond of friendship as if it was something sacred. Margo would never willingly betray her friends.
You will not be able to miss Margo’s confidence. It might very well be her most obvious attribute. Well before she was crowned High Queen of Fillory, Margo walked around the campus of Brakebills University like she was a queen from birth. That self-esteem runs deep in her veins and it is even visible in the way she walks. It takes a hell of a lot to shake up her confidence. In canon she even lost an eye and still didn’t feel all that bad about her appearance. Oddly enough, the one thing that seemed to rock her to her core was a casually made comment that she didn’t have any friends, only people who were afraid of her.
Lastly, Margo is extremely tough. She is physically very small, being short and of a slight build, but you would be wise not to mess around with her. Not a lot has been said about Margo’s childhood, but it was unhappy and she had “issues.” Surviving an unhappy childhood and said issues, I suspect, helped build the thick skin she has now. She has become talented with magic and can defend herself and others with it well. When magic fails she has resorted to more conventional methods, like handguns. If physical violence is too dire a measure, Margo has one of the sharpest tongues around and she even use that like a weapon.
Personal Moral Codes: Margo is a staunch feminist. There’s nothing that disgusts and pisses her off more than men who refuse to respect her based on her gender. As the high queen of a kingdom that is used to being ruled by strong men and silent women, Margo faces a lot of this. However, she is not the type to roll over and show submission. Loyalty is also important to her, though there are just two people in the world she would do just about anything for. As far as killing and everything illegal goes, Margo doesn’t flinch when it comes to committing crimes so long as they’re committed for what she believes are the right reasons.
Insecurities/Personal Demons: Margo constantly fears that she is alone. There was a comment in canon that really shook her up, someone saying that she didn’t have any friends, just people who were so afraid of her they would rather be on her side. Comments like that stick in her mind and plague her when she’s feeling down. Every time someone would disappear from Pathema, she saw it as one more potential friend vanishing from her life.
A hot button issue for Margo is her feelings for Seth. After all, she’s dated his brother and came very close to actually dropping the L-word
While she doesn’t do drugs much now, she used to party pretty hard with her friend Eliot when they were still at Brakebills University. The temptation to indulge in a few white lines is still there and she does like her liquor.
Abilities/Powers/Weaknesses: Having ruled a country during times of war, Margo is excellent at strategizing. She is also athletic, specializing in the magical sport of welters. She’s actually quite good at planning bank heists and, after watching her best friend, she can fix a decent cocktail. Because of her frequent travels, Margo can speak a little French, Spanish, and Catalan. Margo is a witch and she can do a lot of things, but she isn’t the most talented in her group of friends. Her discipline is Physical Magic, meaning that she can manipulate physical matter – make things levitate, manipulate light and ice and water etc., all sorts of cool stuff. She is also talented in battle magic, which is basically just sending a pulse of energy at your enemy to at least push them away and at most break some bones. There are more complicated spells she could technically perform, but they would sap her energy and potentially turn her into a niffin, a non-human entity made of pure magic and lacking in a soul. Basically, it would kill her and turn her into a psycho ghost thing that would endanger everyone.
Ability/Power/Magic Warping: If it’s okay, I’d like for her to keep levitation as is. If not, trying to levitate something would make her feel the weight of the object in her limbs. Elemental magic would cause the opposite effect of what she wanted to happen. Want to create ice? You get a flame. If she catches on and uses an ice spell with the intention of causing a flame, though, it would actually create ice. If it’s alright with the mods, I’d like healing magic to be screwed up, too. If she tries to heal someone, she not only worsens their injuries, but also takes on the initial injuries herself onto her own body/mind. Everybody gets hurt. If it’s cool, I’d like to keep truly basic, harmless, innocent stuff without having a backlash. She knows a cleaning charm for cleaning rooms and houses, for example. If it’s not okay, maybe that stuff would just not work?
Inventory: Margo will have with her
1. The Earth crown of Fillory,
2. A blue dress in Fillorian fashion with shoes to match (I figure that’s an outfit?)
3. A nightie in her fashion
4. A handgun – If not okay, then a dagger

This place, whatever and wherever it was, was absolutely batshit insane. Margo’s heart hadn’t stopped pumping erratically since the moment she’d arrived. As if it wasn’t enough to show up side-by-side with some strange looking monster, she’d felt herself being jerked around by her own emotions from the second she’d become aware that she was no longer in Mexico. Something strange and messed up was going on and she didn’t like it one bit.
As she felt the unnatural fear within her slowly ebb away into nothingness, Margo was almost relieved, but she knew better. Nothing was ever that easy. It was pessimistic of her to think in such a way, but she was right. Once the fear was gone, something even worse replaced it. Instead of pounding with terror, her heart suddenly felt like it was breaking. She was filled with sorrow and regret and, in her mind, Margo had a very valid reason for this sudden shift in mood.
Her eyes became glassier, wells of tears building up in those beautiful brown eyes of hers. The moment she blinked, those tears rolled soundlessly down her cheeks. She grabbed a passerby by their sleeve and tugged them closer to her. Even in a suddenly depressed state of mind, Margo, the High Queen of Fillory, could be bossy and demanding of other people. This was another world, but this person might as well have been one of her subjects with the way she treated him.
“I only did it to save him,” She said in between sniffles. “I couldn’t let Eliot die.”
Finally, her hand fell away from the man’s sleeve and she began to whimper quietly, crying more openly than before. Margo couldn’t let go of the image of that day in her mind, the day when she had bargained her best friend’s unborn child to the fairies to save his life. In the moment, she’d felt her actions were perfectly logical and justifiable. Margo knew that he would have done anything to save her life, as well. Still, this was Eliot’s child being stolen away, and now she felt horribly about it.

Are you comfortable with prominent elements of fourth-walling?: Sure! I'd just like a warning!
What themes of horror/psychological thrillers do you enjoy the most?: Honestly, I like the really weird stuff. My favorite book is House of Leaves which contains three layered storylines and one I really like is about a house that shifts walls and hallways and doors according to how people inside communicate. Example, you distance yourself from people emotionally and find yourself in an ever-growing hallway.
Is there anything in particular you absolutely need specific content warnings for?: Nope
Additional Information: Not that I can think of!
