CHARACTER
Character Name: Margo Hanson
Character Age: 24
Canon: The Magicians
Canon Point: Season Two, Episode “The Rattening” with CRAU
World Description: She's not an OC, but I figured I'd answer just in case? Margo’s CRAU involves her moving from Fillory back to New York City which is the NYC we OOCly know and love as of 2017. She was then ripped from an otherwise pleasant, slightly (okay, completely) illegal life shared with Seth Gecko and placed in a dystopian future world where monsters attracted to sound roamed the Earth. It was there that she and Seth met a somewhat charming Sunai named Leo who they unofficially adopted as family. They didn’t live in this world for very long before being brought to this current world.
History: Margo learned of her talent for magic sometime during adolescence. In canon she has admitted to having issues around this time, and we’re talking serious issues. Margo was so ill-adjusted that she wound up as the mastermind behind a magical bank heist in her senior year of high school. As far as we know, it went off without a hitch.
She attended UCLA where she majored in theater, but the real story begins in grad school. Having passed the nearly impossible entrance exam, Margo found herself as a student at Brakebills University, pegged as a specialist in physical magic. There she got to know Eliot Waugh who would become the best friend she’d ever had. The two of them would be partners in crime throwing parties, dabbling in the illegal, and participating in orgies together.
Their lives would change with the arrival of a younger student named Quentin. With him came a lot of trouble and plenty of near death experiences, but also the opportunity to travel to another world named Fillory.
In Fillory, Eliot learned that he had royal blood and was crowned High King. He chose none other than his Bambi, Margo, to rule as High Queen next to him, and for Quentin and another of their friends to fill out other positions in the royal court. It wasn’t smooth at first, but that was only a taste of what was to come.
The source of all magic in all worlds, the Fillorian Wellspring, had been tainted, and therefore magic in every world was experiencing brownouts. Spells were temperamental and a solution needed to be found. That responsibility now fell on Eliot and Margo’s shoulders.
In addition to that, after being duped and deeply offended by a Crown Prince, Margo declared war on a neighboring kingdom in the heat of the moment – A war, as it turned out, that Fillory could not afford to fight. Once more, Margo had to return to Earth to pull off another magical bank heist to steal enough gold bars to fund the war she had caused. Even then, it wasn’t so easy. Problems kept mounting up until Eliot decided to solve their problem by challenging the king of the neighboring kingdom to a sword fight. He believed that, with magic, he could become an expert swordfighter. It was true – A magic spell had him fighting even more impressively than the other king, but the Wellspring was fickle. Fearing that Eliot would die due to a magical brownout, Margo bargained with the only beings in Fillory that could help ensure the magic wouldn’t run out – the fairies. They agreed to fix the Wellspring in exchange for a child and Margo was willing to have a child for them, but they wanted the child carried by Eliot’s pregnant wife. Desperate, Margo bargained off Eliot’s unborn child thinking it would save his life. The Wellspring was fixed, but the bargain was for naught. Eliot returned to the castle declaring to Margo that he had ended the war by agreeing to marry the king of the other kingdom. She kept her bargain with the fairies a secret.
This was around the time Margo took some time to travel back to Earth, New York City to be specific. That was where she met the Gecko brothers and Kate. Margo quickly grew fond of them, especially the elder Gecko brother, Seth, and she charmed him rather quickly, too. They became an item and he provided her with a nice place to stay in the city, but soon enough they were on the road. They robbed a bank together and crossed the border into Mexico for some down time on the beach. That was when she showed up in Reims, a world overrun by monsters attracted to sound.
Margo and Seth met Leo, a kind of monster called Sunai, who became their friend and adopted family in a short period of time. It wasn’t long before they were brought to this current world.
Personality: One quality that definitely defines Margo and all that happens in her life is her craftiness or cunning. She is not always straightforward in trying to achieve what she wants. For instance, she has drugged a friend to get him to participate in a test and she has carefully chosen her words in a conversation to get a girl to bargain away her unborn child to fairies to save Margo’s best friend’s life. There is no doubt that there is a great deal of intelligence behind her machinations, but they are usually less than honest.
Another important facet of Margo is her loyalty to those who are important to her. In canon, she has risked her life, sacrificed one of her eyes, and done despicable things all in the name of protecting her friends. She would likely lay down her own life before letting anyone harm her best friend Eliot who is undoubtedly the one person she truly lets in past her rough exterior. Another character in her character once commented that she didn’t have any friends, but Margo has a handful of them and she treats the bond of friendship as if it was something sacred. Margo would never willingly betray her friends.
You will not be able to miss Margo’s confidence. It might very well be her most obvious attribute. Well before she was crowned High Queen of Fillory, Margo walked around the campus of Brakebills University like she was a queen from birth. That self-esteem runs deep in her veins and it is even visible in the way she walks. It takes a hell of a lot to shake up her confidence. In canon she even lost an eye and still didn’t feel all that bad about her appearance. Oddly enough, the one thing that seemed to rock her to her core was a casually made comment that she didn’t have any friends, only people who were afraid of her.
Lastly, Margo is extremely tough. She is physically very small, being short and of a slight build, but you would be wise not to mess around with her. Not a lot has been said about Margo’s childhood, but it was unhappy and she had “issues.” Surviving an unhappy childhood and said issues, I suspect, helped build the thick skin she has now. She has become talented with magic and can defend herself and others with it well. When magic fails she has resorted to more conventional methods, like handguns. If physical violence is too dire a measure, Margo has one of the sharpest tongues around and she even use that like a weapon.
Inventory: The clothes on her back, a skein of yarn, and enchanted knitting needles.
Abilities: Margo is a talented witch who can cast all sorts of spells. These spells are far from game-breaking. She has her limits. Since she is well-traveled, she speaks a little bit of Spanish, French, and Castilian. Basically enough to ask where the beach is and how to hit on cute foreign guys. As a High Queen ruling in times of war and part of a bank-robbing twosome, Margo has learned how to strategize.
Flaws: Margo is a self-confessed snob. In her past, she was known to be a bit of a mean girl and partied way too hard. She is fierce and overly competitive. In the source material for the show, she is described as being made of ‘anger and armor’. On the show she’s a little more complex, but the anger is there. Counting her CRAU, Margo is an accomplished thief and bank robber who likens herself to Bonnie Parker.
CR AU
Previous Game and Time: I played her in memes with a PSL going on for a little over a year, then in The Quiet Place from March through the middle of April 2018.
Previous Development: Because of her CRAU, Margo is much more willing to give monogamy a shot. Her relationship with Seth is like no other she's ever experienced before. Yes, she's been in relationships that have involved dabbling in the illegal before, but she's never been this close to a man before. Right now, Margo is close enough to Seth to call him her one and only. She wouldn't even dream of polyamory, which is something she used to be more than comfortable with. She’s just as wild as she used to be, but perhaps has stepped it up a bit now that she’s openly breaking the law. Margo is also a little more open about the notion of family now that Leo is a part of the circle she and Seth have created.
SAMPLES
Action Log Sample: This place, whatever and wherever it was, was absolutely batshit insane. Margo’s heart hadn’t stopped pumping erratically since the moment she’d arrived. As if it wasn’t enough to show up side-by-side with some strange looking monster, she’d felt herself being jerked around by her own emotions from the second she’d become aware that she was no longer in Mexico. Something strange and messed up was going on and she didn’t like it one bit.
As she felt the unnatural fear within her slowly ebb away into nothingness, Margo was almost relieved, but she knew better. Nothing was ever that easy. It was pessimistic of her to think in such a way, but she was right. Once the fear was gone, something even worse replaced it. Instead of pounding with terror, her heart suddenly felt like it was breaking. She was filled with sorrow and regret and, in her mind, Margo had a very valid reason for this sudden shift in mood.
Her eyes became glassier, wells of tears building up in those beautiful brown eyes of hers. The moment she blinked, those tears rolled soundlessly down her cheeks. She grabbed a passerby by their sleeve and tugged them closer to her. Even in a suddenly depressed state of mind, Margo, the High Queen of Fillory, could be bossy and demanding of other people. This was another world, but this person might as well have been one of her subjects with the way she treated him.
“I only did it to save him,” She said in between sniffles. “I couldn’t let Eliot die.”
Finally, her hand fell away from the man’s sleeve and she began to whimper quietly, crying more openly than before. Margo couldn’t let go of the image of that day in her mind, the day when she had bargained her best friend’s unborn child to the fairies to save his life. In the moment, she’d felt her actions were perfectly logical and justifiable. Margo knew that he would have done anything to save her life, as well. Still, this was Eliot’s child being stolen away, and now she felt horribly about it.
