Character name: Margo Hanson
Canon: The Magicians (taking her from the very end of S3)
Age: 26
Gift from Miss L: Eliot Waugh, her best friend and platonic soulmate

Powers and abilities: Margo can cast a variety of spells using hand motions similar to tutting. She can also mix simple potions, though those have mostly been limited to variations on magical hangover cures that she’s created. She is also familiar with battle magic – the ability to repel an opponent using a simple hand gesture – and she speaks a little bit of a few languages thanks to traveling with her best friend, but is fluent in English and Indonesian. Her fairy eye can detect magic and see the supernatural, including ghosts that aren’t typically visible to the human eye.

Personality: One quality that definitely defines Margo and all that happens in her life is her craftiness or cunning. She is not always straightforward in trying to achieve what she wants. For instance, she has drugged a friend to get him to participate in a test and she has carefully chosen her words in a conversation to get a girl to bargain away her unborn child to fairies to save Margo’s best friend’s life. There is no doubt that there is a great deal of intelligence behind her machinations, but they are usually less than honest.

Another important facet of Margo is her loyalty to those who are important to her. In canon, she has risked her life, sacrificed one of her eyes, and done despicable things all in the name of protecting her friends. She would likely lay down her own life before letting anyone harm her best friend Eliot who is undoubtedly the one person she truly lets in past her rough exterior. Another character in her canon once commented that she didn’t have any friends, but Margo has a handful of them and she treats the bond of friendship as if it was something sacred. Margo would never willingly betray her friends.

You will not be able to miss Margo’s confidence. It might very well be her most obvious attribute. Well before she was crowned High Queen of Fillory, Margo walked around the campus of Brakebills University like she was a queen from birth. That self-esteem runs deep in her veins and it is even visible in the way she walks. It takes a hell of a lot to shake up her confidence. In canon she even lost an eye and still didn’t feel all that bad about her appearance. Oddly enough, the one thing that seemed to rock her to her core was a casually made comment that she didn’t have any friends, only people who were afraid of her.

Lastly, Margo is extremely tough. She is physically very small, being short and of a slight build, but you would be wise not to mess around with her. Not a lot has been said about Margo’s childhood, but it was unhappy and she had “issues.” Surviving an unhappy childhood and said issues, I suspect, helped build the thick skin she has now. She has become talented with magic and can defend herself and others with it well. When magic fails she has resorted to more conventional methods, like handguns. If physical violence is too dire a measure, Margo has one of the sharpest tongues around and she even use that like a weapon.

Reactions to Lovewater: Margo isn’t exactly keen on giving up her claim on the throne of Fillory to live in Lovewater for however long she stays there, but Eliot’s safety is more important to her than anything else at the moment and right now he’s in the hands of the Monster. She’s been assured that if she stays in town and pays tribute, the monster will not harm her best friend. That’s enough to make just about any trip worthwhile for Margo. She might seem a little grumpy at first while in this place, but she’s eternally grateful to be here.

History: Margo Hanson grew up in Los Angeles. A daddy’s girl from birth, it was particularly devastating when she grew apart from her father and he rejected the woman she grew up to be. As an older teenager, she was left with nothing but bitterness for the man and decided to put the past behind her. It was ideal that around this time she developed her magical abilities. She utilized them in clever ways, including robbing a bank, and once she was old enough she was sought out and invited to the university for magic, Brakebills, located in New York.

There, she met her platonic soulmate, the charismatic and equally broken Eliot Waugh. The two of them got into all kinds of trouble together, traveling the globe and throwing wonderful parties on campus. He was her best friend and she was his Bambi.

In her senior year at Brakebills, new students arrived including Quentin, Alice, Penny, and Kady. Margo would become friends with some of them and partners in crime with all of them, torturing them on the side as every decent senior student does to underclassmen.

Their misadventures would eventually lead them to another world altogether, one that most people in their universe had only ever heard of in children’s books. It was called Fillory. As it turns out, Eliot was predetermined by blood to be Fillory’s high king, but there were four thrones. After a test involving 90’s trivia, Margo was crowned high queen, Alice as queen, and Quentin as king. Their rule would not be an easy one.

After a particularly strange twist in the story involving fairies and politics, Eliot and Margo lost their crowns. She had already lost her right eye to the fairies and had been wearing an eyepatch for months. This added insult to injury. It was proposed that the next high king be chosen by the people of Fillory in a democratic election. The choices on the ballot were Eliot Waugh and Tick Pickwick, a former member of Eliot’s court, but in the end the people and the talking animals of Fillory chose a write-in candidate – Margo Hanson. Margo was the first female high king. Having earned the fairy queen’s respect, she was gifted with a fairy eye that could see magic.

As part of a quest she and her friends went on, Margo temporarily lost her memory and identity. She believed her name was Janet Pluchinsky and that she was a fashion editor for a magazine called Hipbone. Eliot had it worse. An unkillable monster had possessed his body, pushing Eliot to the furthest corner of his own mind. Once Margo and her friends got their memories back, though, they were all about saving Eliot. Margo sacrificed her crown temporarily so that she might make a voyage into the desert to retrieve magical axes that could release the monster within Eliot. Things got a little complicated, and Quentin had to sacrifice himself in order to save them all, but Margo was able to bring Eliot back by striking him with the axe.

Life after Quentin’s death was not easy. For one, time was screwed up and Fillory was sent way into the future. A Dark King had taken over and Margo’s friends Fen and Josh who she had left Fillory in the care of had long since died. Now it was time to save her kingdom from the Dark King. One unfortunate setback, Eliot had fallen for him. Also, back on Earth, some crazy stuff was going on with the moon. True to their usual fashion, though, Margo and her friends were able to save the Earth from destruction. Fillory, however, was doomed. To save its inhabitants, Margo and her friends condensed all the living things in Fillory into a snow globe and released them into a new world of their own creation, one Margo would rule. She was no longer High King Margo The Destroyer, but High King Margo The Creator.

Sample 1: [ Margo appears onscreen. It’s her first video broadcast in this place, so she’s decided that, what the hell, she’s going to put her best foot forward. Her hair is neatly styled and her makeup is perfectly applied just as it might be at home even if he heart is not truly in it in this place. The honest truth is that she’s much more comfortable on a throne than in some magical sex city, but this isn’t about her at all; it’s about Eliot.

She purses her lips as she looks into the camera and reminds herself of that. Best foot forward, Margo tells herself before even opening her mouth. ]

Hello, Lovewater, I’m Margo.

[ She gives a shrug of her shoulders. ]

It’s been, like, forever since I last did a proper introduction, so I’m not even sure where to start. I’m a magician – not like a rabbit out of a hat magician, like a witch – and I’m a good one, but I have like… Zero fucking clue how magic is going to work in this place, so… Trial and error, right?

I’m also a king. High king.

[ Margo rolls her eyes. ]

Gender norms are such bullshit, so please avoid questions like ”Don’t you mean you’re a queen?” or ”Doesn’t someone have to have a dick to be a king?” I’ve heard it all before.

Anyway, I’m here to keep my best friend alive so please don’t make this difficult for me.

Sample 2:
It doesn’t take a lot of thought on Margo’s part to decide that she wants to be in Lovewater. All she needs to see is the inscribed offer that the deity will take care of Eliot while she’s gone. Right now Margo knows that a deity can take better care of her best friend than she ever could. With a monster in control of his body, who knows what awful things could go wrong? No, she needs to be here to ensure his safety.

That’s what brings her to the rail station. What expectations does she even have for this place? Aside from knowing why she’s here, she doesn’t know a whole lot about her journey in this place. What is she going to do for a living? Where is she going to live? Margo is more than a little bit lost. It would probably help if she knew even just one person in this place, but she feels utterly alone on this journey. While it isn’t the first undertaking she’s been through on her own, it is probably the most important one to date.

The moment she formally accepts the invitation, though, is a hazy one. There’s the familiar sensation she often feels when she’s stayed up far too late at night and finally slips off into a slumber. That’s all she remembers before waking up.
